Goal:

To introduce the purpose of evaluation and the desired phenotypic traits of the ideal market lamb.

Description:

To satisfy today’s consumer demands, successful sheep producers must market animals, which are lean and muscular. In order to stay on the leading edge of production and profitability, selection programs are essential. In the presentation, a sheep expert discusses market lamb evaluation using five criteria: growth, muscling, structural correctness, style and balance and finish.

Goal:

To introduce the purpose of evaluation and the desired phenotypic traits of the ideal breeding sheep.

Description:

Today’s breeding sheep are selected based upon the combination of phenotype, performance records and the projected performance of the progeny. Listen and watch as these factors are explained using wool-type breeds, meat-type breeds and their performance data. The featured specialist presents a practice class in which he demonstrates major evaluative criteria: size and scale, structural correctness, muscling, volume and capacity, breed and sex characteristics and wool production. An excellent set of collegiate oral reasons is given.

Goal:

To introduce the purpose of evaluation and the desired phenotypic traits of the ideal market hog.

Description:

The present-day ideal market hog has a maximum amount of muscle and a minimum amount of fat. To help student judges and hog producers reach toward the ideal, the presentation discusses market hog evaluation in four instructional sections: muscling, leanness, size and scale and structural soundness. A practice class of market hogs, discussion of official placing and cuts by a swine specialist, plus a set of collegiate oral reasons also is provided.

Objectives:

2. To compare the modern type with the old-fashioned type market hog, recognizing at least three advantages of the modern hog for today’s consumer.

To present students with all the components of a breeding system and to provide detailed steps in creating a breeding program.

Description:

Designing a breeding program is a never-ending process— markets change, livestock change, technologies change and we change. However, this presentation outlines proven breeding programs (i.e., rotational, rotational-terminal, static cross breeding) which have withstood the test of time. It also provides information pertaining to sire and replacement female selection. This presentation will aid students in designing a system best suited for their operational needs.
